“I’ve always been drawn to portraits in museums and the day I decided to try it myself, my life changed forever. The moment I relish most as an artist is the one where I first stand in front of a person on my model stand and really look at them, wondering what their life and personality is like and if it will show up in my painting. I hope this moment never ends.”

Nancy Larson

Nancy grew up on a farm in east central Minnesota where her creative adventures started at an early age. After receiving a B.S. Degree in Art Education from St. Cloud State, she taught art to all grade levels in the public schools.

Nancy is a painter who works primarily in watercolor. She also paints in oil, acrylic, gouache, pastel, and ink sketching with watercolor. She is a realist with a major interest in landscapes. She has a fascination with old barns and houses. Nancy has taught painting in several senior long-term care facilities in the Twin Cities. She has also taught at the Blaine Community Center and the Rum River Art Center in Anoka. Since 2019, she has taught at the Maple Grove Art Center. Nancy is a member of the Northstar Watermedia Society where she has exhibited her art, helped put up and take down art shows, and served as a board member.

“My watercolor classes provide an opportunity to discover the spontaneity and flexibility of the medium while learning design elements to enhance the work. This especially includes learning how to use values because ‘value does all the work’ in a painting while ‘color gets the credit’. The greatest success in watercolor painting, though, is learning how to manage the water. In each class we learn a different skill to practice design structure while learning water control. My classes are small so my students receive the attention and direction they may need. My patience and sensitivity to my students encourages exploration, risk, and growth.

I have a passion for teaching and consider myself a life-long student in painting, American history, nature, and life.”

Anwesha Guha

Anwesha grew up in the eastern part of India, learning painting, classical music and yoga as a vital part of her culture from a very early age. She continued to educate herself in many mediums and obtained her diploma in Fine Arts. Using her qualification in art and her Masters in Business Administration, worked in IT consulting before moving to the US in 2015 to continue her artistic adventure.

Her venture Think Art, started during the pandemic when she created different groups with kids, teenagers, and adults who loved art. The belief that “anyone who can put a dot on a paper is an artist has grown into a viable arts based business.

Beginning in 2022, she has participated in many art shows and festivals.

“We are born from nature, so living within nature gives us a life full of happiness. When I paint I find myself very close to nature in total harmony. Always wanted to interact with birds, mountains, rivers, oceans and painting is the medium that gives me the opportunity to feel them up close. Painting gives the eternal peace which in turn helps in creating a piece of art.”

Rachel Arntson

Mosaics have intrigued me for years, but I was hooked when I saw the ceiling to floor mosaics at San Marco's Cathedral in Venice, Italy. I have created mosaics for the last 15 years and especially focus on photos I have taken on my many travels. I use stained glass, rocks, beads, dishes, metal, Italian glass called smalti, and any other material that I feel will create my desired effect.

My Mosaic Breaks occur about 3 times a year.  At these 2-3 day events, I teach others how to make their own mosaic. If you are interested in learning this art form,  look for my classes on the Maple Grove Art Center website or contact me at Rachel@TalkItRockIt.com.

Art is all about feeling the freedom to take risks, to explore the unknown, to trust your own judgment. Because when you are free to dream, you find the power to create.

Laura Stamper

Evolution would be the best word to describe how Laura works. Her background is in illustration and painting. She has explored a sculpture in ceramics. These skills are the foundation for her figurative jewelry pieces.  For many years, Laura incorporated porcelain sculpture with metal work. These miniatures are easily recognizable and are in collections world wide. Laura's progression into enamel work seemed inevitable.

Her current body of work is a marriage of elegance and the unexpected. The contemporary movement of the metalwork is in sharp contrast to the primitive elements of rough stones and the elegance of enamels. She is always looking for new ways to express herself through her art.

Laura started teaching jewelry arts in 2010 and has been a guest instructor in many workshops nationwide. Her unique approach to teaching includes shortcuts and tips in every class.

In her spare time you will often find her at various art activities and classes with her daughter, traveling with her husband and sharing her home with multiple rescue dogs!

Dianne Merten

Dianne graduated with a bachelor’s in education and has offered classes at a high school level, small adult groups, and through art centers. A student of countless workshops and classes, she has studied under such great Minnesota artists as Michelle Combs and Mary Pettis.

Dianne started her professional artist’s career in 1985 following a pathway that traveled through the realms of folk art to faux wall finishes to acrylic to her present focus on oil landscapes. During this past decade, Dianne has been honing her skills as a plein air artist, a landscape art form that is largely painted at an outdoor easel. If asked, she would explain that plein air is all about capturing the light—shadow, shade, highlights and tone values—and translating what her emotion sees into a final rendering.

Bernadette Chlebeck

Bernadette enjoys creating art that people use to layer their personal space with beauty. She often uses bright vivid colors, inspired by life and the people around her. Her focus with each piece is to evoke a sense of calm and relaxation when the viewer gazes into the image.

Her ventures into art started at the end of the pandemic. She studied art at Anoka Ramsey Community College, countless art center classes, online, and self-study. In 2023 she started selling her art at local art fairs and art centers.

Her Alcohol Ink classes are designed to teach students how to use the tools and the medium so students can create their own works of art. “I believe anyone can be an artist. You just need to surround yourself with the right people in the right place.”
