Art in Motion Show Winners

1st Place
Euphonic Euphoria by Andrea Jankowski

This piece demonstrators how an artist’s hand can create a feeling, and tell a story, just by the way they choose to place colors and shapes on canvas. Euphoric Euphoria is a painting of a still object, and despite this it evokes the feeling of movement. If you could hear this painting you would be moved by the sound. The bright brassiness with its perfectly placed highlights juxtaposed against a cool color pallet suggests movement within the shadows. The gesturing style of each paint stroke creates a feeling of place. You can imagine the big brass sound filling a room with shifting lights in a dark and crowded space filled with movement.

2nd Place
Playground Fun by Anastasia Henn

Nothing is more in motion than our children, flying through time and growing up too fast. Anastasia chose to soften the details of this scene creating a moment frozen, a second that has already long passed us by. They could be anyone’s children anywhere in the world, which makes this very specific moment feel more accessible to a wider audiences, but we happen to know that they are the children of our community here in Maple Grove. The styling of their portraits almost blurred, as though the shutter speed of the camera couldn’t keep up with the dizzying speed of our children motion.

3rd Place
Strawberry Splash by Carol Collins

The thought of a small strawberry causing such a big splash elicits the saying “enlarged to show texture”. Attention to detail around the tiny seeds in the strawberry creates depth and the subtle shift in colors creates enough contrast to showcase a big splash in a simple way.
